My name is Megan Ball and I'm an aspiring writer.
Now I’ve graduated from the University of Winchester, I plan to dedicate a year to starting my writing career. I mainly write short stories and scripts and was proud to have my play, Flatpacked, a chilling tale of domestic abuse, performed at the Theatre Royal Winchester in 2013. It was also performed at the Brighton Fringe Festival in May 2013.

I was a finalist in the 2012 New Writer microfiction competition. My story ‘The Engineer’ was based on the
experience of my granddad who was one of the first at the scene of the 1972
Staines plane disaster. This story is
reflective of my writing as I’m keen to explore remarkable things that happen
to everyday people.
I love reading a variety of
genres and completed a 100 book challenge in 2012. This year I’ve reduced my
target to 50 because I want my focus to be on writing (although reading is still important).
I was inspired to pursue a
writing career after reading The Pact by Jodi Picoult in 2006. I wrote to Jodi
and asked for her advice on becoming a writer. She took the time to reply and
encouraged me to study Creative Writing at university, but life got in the way. I finally found the courage to give up my job
in financial services after I met my then boyfriend James who along with my
parents told me to go for it.
In 2011 during my second year at university James and I married. In the same week as the wedding I handed in
four assignments and can’t believe I managed to get it all done. This triggered
an idea for my first blog thestudenthousewife which documented our first year of
juggling uni and marriage. It also
inspired me to write the article The A-Z
of your Perfect Wedding which was published on splendidfred.com and I was
stunned to find it had also won the creative writing prize for
non-fiction at my uni.
I’m excited to think about what’s
going to happen in the coming months and I’m looking forward to sharing it with
you.
